Philippine Pickleball Court

When the client planned to build a modern pickleball facility in the Philippines, the challenge was not simply creating a covered playing area. The project needed to provide comfortable playing conditions in a tropical climate, accommodate multiple courts, offer a better spectator experience, and maintain an efficient construction approach.

Based on these requirements, Canglong Group developed a customized portal frame steel structure solution, combining a large-span steel frame, semi-open building layout, and customized internal steel platform design.

The completed project successfully transformed a traditional steel structure concept into a multifunctional pickleball facility integrating sports, viewing, and leisure spaces.

Philippines Pickleball Court Steel Structure Project

Project Background: Building a Comfortable Sports Facility for a Tropical Climate

Located in Southeast Asia, the Philippines experiences high temperatures, humidity, and seasonal heavy rainfall. For an outdoor sports facility, excessive heat and poor air circulation can directly affect the user experience.

Therefore, the client was looking for more than a simple roof structure. The building needed to provide protection from sun and rain while maintaining natural airflow and creating a comfortable environment for players and visitors.

During the design stage, Canglong’s engineering team focused on balancing three key factors: structural stability, climate adaptability, and functional space utilization.

Engineering Solution: Portal Frame Structure Creates an Open Sports Space

To achieve a large and flexible interior area, the project adopted a portal frame steel structure system.

Compared with traditional structures that may require more internal supports, the rigid frame system provides an open layout with fewer obstacles inside the building. This allowed the client to arrange multiple pickleball courts while maintaining comfortable movement space for players and spectators.

The main load-bearing structure uses high-strength H-section steel columns and beams, while CNC-machined C-section steel purlins are used as secondary structural members to support the roof and wall system.

Double-Pitched Roof Design Responds to Heavy Rainfall

Considering the local rainfall conditions, the building adopts a double-pitched roof design with an effective drainage slope.

This structure helps quickly discharge rainwater during heavy storms while providing reliable protection for the sports area below.

The lightweight metal roof system also reduces unnecessary structural load while maintaining durability and practicality for long-term operation.

Semi-Open Design Improves Airflow and User Comfort

One of the important design decisions for this project was the semi-open building concept.

Instead of creating a fully enclosed sports hall, the design uses roof and upper wall panels for weather protection, while keeping lower wall sections open to encourage natural ventilation.

This layout allows the building to take advantage of local airflow conditions, reducing heat accumulation and creating a more comfortable playing environment without relying entirely on energy-intensive cooling systems.

Optimized Column Layout Maximizes Court Arrangement

For sports facilities, internal space efficiency is critical because structural columns can affect court arrangement and player movement.

The engineering team optimized the steel frame layout with approximately 10-meter column spacing, reducing interference within the activity area while maintaining structural performance.

The combination of H-section steel primary frames and C-section steel secondary members creates an effective balance between strength, material efficiency, and usable space.

Customized Steel Platform Adds Additional Functional Space

Beyond the main pickleball courts, the project also incorporated a customized steel platform to improve the overall functionality of the facility.

The elevated platform provides an improved viewing position for spectators, while the supporting area below can be used for player rest, equipment storage, rental services, and other operational functions.

Rather than changing the building into a multi-storey structure, this approach uses the existing steel frame space more efficiently while maintaining the openness required for sports activities.

Project Result: A Flexible Steel Sports Facility for Future Use

Through the combination of portal frame steel construction, tropical climate adaptation, and customized spatial planning, this Philippines pickleball court project achieved the client’s goal of creating a practical and comfortable sports facility.

The project demonstrates how prefabricated steel structures can extend beyond traditional warehouse and industrial applications, providing flexible solutions for sports buildings, commercial facilities, and other large-span structures.

Why Portal Frame Steel Structure Was Selected
  • Large-span interior space: Suitable for sports courts and facilities requiring fewer internal columns.
  • Flexible customization: Building dimensions, roof systems, wall systems, and accessories can be adjusted according to project requirements.
  • Efficient fabrication: Steel components are manufactured in the factory before shipment, improving construction efficiency.
  • Climate adaptability: Structural and enclosure systems can be designed according to local weather conditions.
